Re: "Quality of Life" and Violent Crime
Noise and Crime. The literature contains studies on the effects of noise on
aggression as well as the finding that people in noisy environments are less
helpful. Also look at Ted Wachs' work on the relationship betweeen being
raised in a noisy environment and social skills. Studies on noise and
aggression and noise and helping behavior have been discussed in articles I
have written and in environmental psychology textbooks. London has newspaper
articles linking noise to crime - these too should be examined. My chapter on
noise in Pat Thompson's Environmental Issues for the 21st Century is now out.
Publisher Peter Lang. The existing literature should be a starting point for
the design of a study examining what is happening in New York and elsewhere on
quality of life issues and crime. Arline Bronzaft
