Diana's funeral
Over two billion people watched a 117-minute procession that was conducted
in almost complete silence. On Canadian television there was almost no
commentary. This silence created a space where genuine emotions could
arise.
This may be the greatest advertisement for quiet ever produced.
By contrast, I read in the paper today that some American networks showed
slo-mo footage of Diana as Elton John sang. Another example of how the
media lives by programming feelings.
