Spring 2000

5th International Noise Awareness Day

Wedensday, April 12, 2000

The Right to Quiet Society reaches an encouraging milestone this year, with the observance of this, our 5th International Noise Awareness Day, originated by the League for the Hard of Hearing in New York. Come and join forces with us! Weather permitting, we will be meeting at noon on the southeast corner of Georgia and Homer (north side of the main branch of the Vancouver Public Library) to distribute our leaflets. This is a major highlight in our continuing efforts to raise public awareness, and we look forward to seeing you there!

For those members living outside the Lower Mainland, please contact the Society for leaflets and bulletins to distribute and post in your area.

To emphasize the importance of our campaign for relief from chronic noise, we ask that participants around the world observe at least 1 minute of silence at 2:15 p.m. local time on INAD, April 12, 2000.

In other activities, the Society will be soliciting proclamations of INAD from approximately thirty BC Municipalities, effectively putting the issue on each of these councils' agenda. Also, we will be issuing press releases stating our position on leaf blowers, boom cars, and motor vehicles with deliberately modified exhaust systems, as a further effort to raise awareness of the detrimental effects of these sources of unnecessary noise in our communities.

Municipal Act Campaign

The Right to Quiet Society is continuing our campaign to have the Municipal Act updated by the Honourable Cathy McGregor, recently appointed Minister of Municipal Affairs. You will find enclosed with this newsletter a form letter to this effect, ready to be signed and posted to the Minister. Personalized letters carry added weight. Please take the time to make your feelings on this important issue known to the government.
